Mass protests continue in Georgia against the authorities’ decision to freeze EU membership negotiations until 2028. The authorities are using brutal measures to try to quell the protests.
As of today, 240 Georgian diplomats working for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and diplomatic missions abroad have joined the protests, including the ambassadors to Bulgaria, the Netherlands, Italy… Salome Shapakidze, the ambassador of Georgia in Lithuania, also resigned in protest, ending her resignation with the slogan “Georgia is Europe!”
The Georgian authorities threatened to take action against the protesting diplomats.
The Lithuanian Ambassadors’ Club, which brings together 136 active and retired ambassadors, stands in solidarity with our colleagues in the diplomatic service of Georgia who have signed the protest petition. We call on the government of Georgia to abandon any discriminatory measures against the diplomats who signed the petition. We firmly believe that only close cooperation with and membership of the EU can ensure full progress and stability for Georgia.
