Event to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Ambassador A. Venskus

On 27 February 2025, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs hosted an event organised by the Lithuanian Ambassadors’ Club (LAC), commemorating the 100th birth anniversary of Adolfas Venskus, Lithuania’s Ambassador to the EU and NATO.

Ambassadors Algirdas Saudargas, Vygaudas Ušackas, Rytis Martikonis, and writer Valdas Papievis shared their warm memories and insights about Ambassador Venskus.

While A. Venskus was the first ambassador to the EU and NATO, his involvement with Lithuanian activities began long before his appointment – his journey is documented in a memoir compiled by writer Valdas Papievis. “The Ambassador’s stories, though fascinating, were fragmented. This inspired the idea of their compilation into a book. While early conversations focused on his and his wife’s love for Lithuania, a pivotal moment occurred upon discussing his childhood “– noted Valdas Papievis.

Upon his arrival in Paris, A. Venskus became deeply engaged in Lithuanian community initiatives. Even after attaining significant professional stature, he consistently ensured that Lithuania’s presence remained prominent across Europe and globally. Ambassador’s contribution to Lithuania’s NATO and EU membership was exceptionally pivotal, leaving an indelible mark on the history of Lithuanian diplomacy. The Ambassador keenly recognised that robust inter-nation ties and effective diplomatic relations stemmed from genuine personal interaction. He was an enlightened and honest individual who highly valued camaraderie, possessing a remarkable ability to communicate warmly, directly, and engagingly with anyone.

LAC President A. Rimkūnas, who moderated the discussion, extended gratitude to all participants, both in-person and remote, for their active engagement and for sharing invaluable and compelling recollections of the Ambassador and their collaborative efforts.
