A Lecture: “Return. The Lost International Treaties of the Republic of Lithuania 1918-1940”

We would like to express our gratitude for attending the lecture organised by the Lithuanian Ambassadors’ Club (LAC) on 13 June 2022, entitled “Return. The lost International Treaties of the Republic of Lithuania 1918-1940”, which took place at the Lithuanian Central State Archives. This LAC event was the first one, held outside the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

During the meeting, Ambassador Vytautas Žalys presented the historical facts, his personal insights and knowledge about the circumstances of the disappearance of the documents, mostly pre-war international treaties of the Republic of Lithuania and the chronological events of their return to Lithuania.

All participants were given an exclusive opportunity to see the originals of the returned international treaties, which bear the signatures of the famous Lithuanian and foreign politicians, diplomats and heads of state, such as Pope Pius XI, Emperor Hirohito of Japan, King George V of the United Kingdom, King Christian X of Denmark, Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt of the United States of America, President Paul von Hindenburg of Germany, and many others.

Mr Dalius Žižys, the Director of the Central State Archives of Lithuania, who participated in the event, also shared his insights and memories of the retrieval of these international treaties.

These documents will be exhibited at the Palace of the Grand Dukes Museum from 6 July 2022 to 18 September 2022.
